Healthy Substitutes for your Favourite Treats

The Fundamental Principle of Fashion

Hello my dearest readers! The world that we live in is a fabulous place in many aspects however among many things, one thing that clouds our existence is food cravings. I am one of those people who crave the luscious hug of chocolate 20 4 7 and trust me, its exhausting!! However, like many people in the world, I genuinely feel that when i am in one of these craving moods, I simply cannot live without said craving which cannot be healthy!! Thus i have made a list of my favourite substitutes to step in for those devilish cravings that sweep the nation.

  • If you crave ice creams and frozen yoghurts, venture into the world of natural, unsweetened yoghurts and the possibilities that accompany them. I personally love a glass of natural yoghurt mixed with sunflower seeds, honey, berries and a dash of maple syrup!
  • If you like me, crave chocolate, then substitute some nuts! I am personally favouring cashews because to me, they have the nicest texture. The great thing about nuts is that they taste great and satisfy your needs however, unlike chocolate, they are substantial and keep you full for hours!
  • If you crave salty morsels, your body in fact wants calcium and would love to get it from greens such as kale and broccoli! A glass of milk and some fish may also sooth your cravings.
  • If you crave sweets then berries, grapes and cherries will truly trick your body into feeling happy!

But don’t take my word for it, here are some food craving charts that will back me up on my philosophies:

Dominos Style Cookies!!

Sweet and Chewy Dominoesque Cookies

Hello my dearest readers, I am back after a short sabbatical seeking vengeance! I was at a friends house a few months ago and we ordered a box of Domino Cookies [before that I was a Domino Cookie virgin] and I was awestruck with the excellence of this particular biscuit. Naturally [as I decided it wouldd be impractical to continue ordering box after box of cookies] I went on a hunt for a true replica recipe of the domino cookie, as time feared on I still had not found ~The One~ that is, up until three days ago. Oh yes, three days ago while innocently searching the inter web for a sweet treat of a recipe I happened upon a cookie recipe and I decided to make it. It was only after the glorious treats had been baked that I realised I had found my cookie soulmate and so now, I am here to share the journey!

Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons of salted butter
  • ½ cup of white sugar
  • ⅓ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1½ cups of white flour to start (but I found that I used more and more as the process continued)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cornflour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (or more!) of dark chocolate chips (I used 70% cocoa)
  • 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon

Method

  • Pre-Heat the oven to 170 degrees celsius/ 350 degrees fahrenheit
  • Soften butter in microwave
  • In a big bowl, Add the two sugars to the butter and beat until creamy

  • Add the egg and beat for about 15 seconds until it is just mixed
  • In small bursts, add the rest of the dry ingredients (except for the chocolate chips) beat using a wooden spoon until the mixture is stiff enough to kneed but still slightly slimy (I found that I used a lot more flour then original suggested just to make sure it wasn’t too runny)
  • Add all of the chocolate chips and mix using hands
  • Mould the mixture into a big ball and rap the mixture in cling film-leave to rest in fridge for about an hour and a half
  • Mould into balls about 3.5 centimetres in diameter and place on a baking tray. (the balls don’t need that much space because they don’t spread as much as other cookies – I left about 5cm between each ball)
  • Slightly flatten the balls

  • Bake for about 10-15-20 mins- until they are slightly browned on top and the skewer comes out clean
  • Leave to cool for another 5 minutes so that the centres can harden a little bit
  • Enjoy!

Notes

The original recipe suggested filling the the centres with Nutella but I found that much to sweet so I am currently looking for a less sweet substitute that I can use.

DIY Frozen Yoghurt

The Fundamental Principle of Fashion

Three Ingredient Fro Yo

Hello my dearest readers, alas I am writing today bearing bad news, I have once again been cursed with the duty of getting my braces tightened and let me tell you, it is no picnic! (It hurts to even use the picnic metaphor because I wouldn’t be able to eat anything at it). Yes yes, I should be grateful for being able to have the luxury of getting my teeth straightened, and don’t get me wrong, I am, but oh how the day, the day I am finally freed from my metal mouth traps, that glorious day seems to slide further and further out of reach… OK I need to get to the point, the reason I am writing this post is because I can’t eat any solid food for the next two or three days and I need something cool to sooth my mouth. ENTER: Frozen yoghurt. I found this recipe on Buzzfeed and have decided to test it out, so fingers crossed!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of frozen strawberries
  • 3 frozen bananas*
  • 2/3 of a cup of plane Greek Yoghurt

Equipment

  • knife
  • container for the yoghurt
  • cup measurements
  • a food processor
  • a freezer

Method

  • Okay so, I planned to upload this blog post yesterday but I completely misread the recipe and didn’t realise the berries and bananas had to be frozen so i had to wait over night for that to occur so I am just making sure that you know!!
  • So first I washed the strawberries and bananas then peeled and cut them. The recipe calls for three banana (but the bananas that I had bought were particularly massive), so I recommend to use two large or three average sized.
  • I froze the bananas and strawberries over night and began the next set of the recipe in the morning.
  • I threw all the ingredients into the food processor, it took quite a bit of blending so I would suggest adding the fruit to the yogurt in small chunks, I did not and it was quite the  boo boo.
  • Once everything was blended, about a year later, I poured the thick substance into my recycled ice-cream tub and waited for the suggested 2 hours for it to freeze.
Okay, just a quick note before I continue with the recipe, Buzz Feed suggests freezing for 2 hours which was definitely not enough time, it took  nearly 5 hours for my yoghurt to be completely frozen.
  • When the time finally came to indulge in ma fro yo, I was impressed, it tasted amazing and it was so creamy yet solid (if that makes sense!). It tasted slightly bland though, so I suggest serving with toppings such as more berries, a jam or syrup of some sort, or white chocolate chips.

I was very impressed with the recipe and I couldn’t wait to have more the next day, however when I returned to the freezer in the morning, I found that the yoghurt had become too frozen and was now more solid and icy, no longer creamy. It was still edible but it didn’t have that initial wow factor to it. So make sure if you are undertaking this recipe, to continuously check the mixture while it is freezing so that you don’t miss out on its peak time!!

Over all, I thought the recipe was fabulous and I will be very excited to sooth my brace pain with it in the future! 5 strawberries out of 5!Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 18.51.25.png
